Corneal Transplant (Cornea Transplant)
Corneal transplantation or corneal grafting is a surgical procedure, where damaged or diseased cornea is removed and replaced by donated corneal tissue. A healthy corneal tissue from the eye of a deceased human donor replaces the damaged cornea. In cases when the entire cornea is replaced, it is known as penetrating keratoplasty and in cases when only part of the cornea is replaced it is known as lamellar keratoplasty. Cornea transplant is indicated in cases, when the cornea turns cloudy or has a white opacity and vision is compromised. Common causes of this, includes conditions like corneal decompensation, infections, dystrophies, corneal scars and keratoconus. Performing a cornea transplant needs the healthy cornea of a deceased human who has donated eye and is stored and utilised.
